Emily Logan
Human Resources Specialist
Accel Pest and Termite Control
Virginia Beach, Virginia
How did you get started in the industry?
Five years ago, while completing my bachelor’s degree online and working part-time at a credit union, I met someone through my volunteer work at Big Brothers Big Sisters who encouraged me to apply for a new position. What I initially considered a meaningful job and a step up from my role at the credit union has unexpectedly turned into a fulfilling career!
Did you have any mentors along the way? Who are they, and how did they impact your career path?
From the start of my career at Accel, my supervisor, Wendy, has exemplified successful female leadership, particularly in the pest industry. She has not only been an excellent manager but has also significantly contributed to my development in my human resources role. Likewise, my mentor, Julie, has been invaluable in helping me navigate complex HR issues and refine our processes.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“Do the next best thing.” This principle has guided me both personally and professionally, helping me manage overwhelming tasks by breaking them down into smaller, more manageable steps.
What are you most excited about these days?
I am most excited about our growing team! One of my favorite parts of my role is getting to live the culture our owners founded Accel on and then finding people who I think can match it.
Describe yourself in three words.
Optimistic, genuine, loyal.
What keeps you awake at night?
“How are we going to find yet another superstar to join our team?” Somehow, we (almost) always manage to find yet another key employee!
What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
Nothing is permanent. This is something that can cause fear but also brings me much comfort.
What was your most embarrassing moment?
Shortly into my career at Accel, I asked the owner of the company how his Easter weekend was. He responded politely that his wife was Jewish. (Insert awkward nervous emoji here.)
What is your guiltiest pleasure?
Ice cream and a good “rom com.” But that doesn’t last too long, because early bedtimes definitely are at the top of the list, too!
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
I’ve always admired musicians. Other than playing the recorder in third grade and “faking” playing the flute, I haven’t successfully learned to play an instrument. I’d like to change that someday, though!
What’s your pet peeve?
When someone does not greet you before asking you for what they need. A simple “good morning” goes a long way in my book!
Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
“Be soft”—life of a mom of a toddler with pets. “Would you like to talk more about it?”—in my professional and personal life.
What entertainment are you binging right now?
Watching “Silo.” Reading Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas.
What’s a book that has stuck with you?
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.
What’s your favorite holiday?
Christmas. I was fortunate that my family made it magical for my brother and me growing up. Now, I take joy in making it an extra-special season for my son. Maybe it’s just me having watched one too many Hallmark movies, but I feel like everyone’s in a better mood during the holiday season.
