A Year in Review: Advancing IDEA in the Pest Control Industry
In 2024, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) continued to recognize that a diverse and inclusive workforce is vital to innovation, community engagement, and industry growth.
Supporting and embracing IDEA is just good business practice. As our industry grapples with attracting, developing, and retaining top talent, driving innovation and creativity, building a positive brand and reputation, and being an employer of choice, IDEA could not be more important.
NPMA has made significant strides over the past year incorporating strategies that foster engagement and leadership opportunities for all pest management professionals as we strive to create a stronger, more inclusive community. We are committed to building a future where everyone feels valued and empowered.
Here are some of the key accomplishments that highlight our progress.
- Driving Business Success: NPMA hosted a series of educational sessions about the importance of including IDEA principles as one driver of business success. The NPMA Employee Recruitment & Retention Committee is developing competency-based hiring and training resources to evaluate job-specific abilities, foster career growth, and enhance company performance.
- Fostering Community Connections: Through initiatives like First Timer’s Sessions at conferences, the NPMA Hives program, and active engagement in Communities+ Diversity Council, PWIPM, and the PestVets Council, NPMA is creating an inclusive environment that celebrates contributions from individuals of diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Cultivating Future Leaders: The Executive Leadership Program and Leader Launch initiatives are designed to prepare and engage volunteer leaders, ensuring strong leadership succession for NPMA. These programs also provide participants with practical skills to drive success within their own organizations.
- Hiring Programs & Partnerships: We have expanded the Military Hiring Program through our partnership with SkillBridge, connecting military talent with open positions in the pest management industry. We continue to strengthen our partnerships with MANRRS (Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences) and JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) to raise awareness about career paths among high school and college students. Additionally, we are developing a new collaboration with Be Pro Be Proud, an initiative that engages high school students seeking immediate career opportunities through hands-on and virtual reality experiences.
- Intentional Action: The IDEA Steering Committee, composed of NPMA members, continues to assess progress and recommend strategies across the organization.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on the progress made in 2024, NPMA recognizes that the journey is ongoing and requires flexibility and openness to learn. We remain steadfast in our commitment to ensure that every individual, regardless of background, has the opportunity to thrive.
Thank you to our members, partners, and advocates who have supported these efforts. Together, we are building a stronger industry for the future.
